The Bluray format is really incredible! I mean there is nothing right now that can compare to the quality. Even the YIFY pirated '1080p' ones that are like 2 gigs (yes I am aware you can get massive files which are better but highly illogical lol) pale in comparison. I agree the state of Bluray on PC is totally ridiculous. I have a pretty substantial bluray collection (60 or so) and I love 'em to pieces:3 I usually just play my blus on my PS3 (which actually has 1080p output for video, not games obviously lol) but on the go I use my external drive for my laptop which has a nice 1080p IPS screen. I mean I guess the average viewer could care less about the quality but I am a cinema and audiophile and I love blurays for that 'uncompressed' quality. copy both video and audio as they are on the disk - fastest, but latest Dolby and DTS audio formats may not be supported by all players. copy video as is, transcode audio to FLAC - about equally fast; audio remains losless; compatible with everything. transcode both video and audio with Handbrake - slowest; smallest files; if compression settings are carefully adjusted, files get much smaller but don't lose much quality I use the middle variation, as it offers best quality and compatibility.
For a large screen, it's wise not to compress video any further. MKV files do get huge, so I've took the cheapest CPU I could find, a bunch of disks and configured an unraid server. Already lost 2 or 3 disks, but never lost any backed-up movie.
